Chapter Twenty-Four

The mansion we are looking at in the dark is well lit, making it easy to see the guards walking around. Trent is next to me on my right, with Maxx on my left. The girls are grouped around us. Trent is with us as he is the only one who knows where Lord Prognati lives. We had left Sena behind because my mother didn’t want her along. It seems that while Sena looks amazing, hot and gorgeous, she has disciplinary issues. She was unhappy about my mother’s choice, but Lina, Silvana and Johanne had a talk with her afterwards, which made her look my way and smile before she left the room with a skip in her step. Not sure what that was about, but something tells me it won’t be the last I see of her.

“Take out?” Maxx says, lying down next to me and looking at the guards go back and forth.

Trent shakes his head and whispers, “No. We are here to get the girl out first, and then I will kill him,” he says. I am about to say something, but Trent says sharply, “Your mother’s orders.”

Sighing, I nod. I know my mother is trying to protect what innocence I have left, but this world, or worlds, isn’t letting me be that innocent 32 years old programmer anymore. I have seen too much of what was hidden in the world, and the Void isn’t going to go away. But before we can truly fight it, we need to make sure our walls are shored up, as the expression goes.

I still need time to show my mother that damn journal too, but after we found out what Lord Prognati was up to, we didn’t want to wait too long before coming here. My mother spent the last four hours writing letter after letter, after which Minard would come in to get them and then head out with them again, probably taking them to various messengers. The rest of us spent our time eating and discussing our plans before we had to leave with Trent.

Our plan tonight is not to kill the guards but to take them out. For that, we all have heavy tranq guns. These things were meant to take out elephants back on Earth. Our goal is one person to rescue, one person to kill. By order of the Queen. And we all have copies of those orders.

Johanne and Lina have the longer tranq rifles. They are both looking at Trent, who lifts his hand up and suddenly brings it down. I hear two soft hisses as the air in the rifles is released. I watch the guards as both of them look down at their chests in shock, but before they can yell, they fall to the ground, unconscious.

Running forward, I check the first guard and make sure he is out. Silvana runs to the second one just as fast. We are to make sure they don’t yell by using the Voice if we need to.
